“Hargh Matey, give us your Gold(eye)!”
Jul 6th, 2008 by Ranger Bob
Speaking of “Dragons” from far away lands, isn’t it supposed to be true (in the story books at least) that there is always some Gold or Booty to be found laying around the forest floor when the quest is done? Usually, with only a meanie Ogre or two in waiting to be slain that are guarding the path that is the path?
In reality though, we recently discovered that there isn’t a “Pot of Gold” at the end of the Rainbow”, especially the one that ends at Wal*Mart (a.k.a. Wally World) which only has a “Golden Arches” restaurant inside. (We heartily recommend the Fillet-O-Fish).
So remember, if you keep up on your questing too.. and avoid Ogre’s.. you will be guaranteed to turn over some Gold of your very own one day as we have. Half the fun is in the searching, the other half is in the finding. Sometimes it pans out, and other times it does not.
On that vein, Scratch and I went and did us a little more prospecting down at “The Bighorn” on the NSR for Gold. Now, some of you have been “taunting us”.. why don’t you share up where this “uber secret place” is?
Well, we continue to argue that one can find most any decent fishing spot upon a map.. any map (like say Google Earth for instance). ‘Tis how we discovered this place for ourselves. Nope, we have no shared GPS waypoint yet to offer up (although, we do have it tucked away and close at hand for when the time is right.)
You see, the funny thing about this place is.. well, we’ve never hooked a fish here yet. No seriously, we see them rise all over the place. It is certainly fishy looking enough, but until we can “proove” it’s worthiness — we’re just not ready to share it.
That said, make no mistake, this place is not secret. Every time we venture out here there are always others nearby fishing it. Usually with spinning gear.. a lawn chair.. and a beer cooler. So, today, we decided to blend in with the natives and packed a spinning rod… but instead of beer, we brought a Gold Pan.
For those not in the know, the NSR has Flake Gold in it! As do most Alberta streams, and since we all know there is more to fishing then just fish mongering, Scratch and I flashed back to our youth. Sharing a single spinning rod up for the day we took turns at panning for Gold and casting for Goldeye.
That was, until the weather went freakishly bad (again)… another thing that almost always seems to happen upon us whenever we visit this place. Anyways, we have no secrets… or claims on this water… and we are certain that if you are “astute” enough you will be able to find your own way out here one day too (hint: see the video).
And yes… we did discover Gold here, but not quite enough to give up either of our day jobs yet. Phhbbbzzzt!
