In time you will find here more Alberta Waterbody Atlas info with links to lakes and streams that we’ve discovered worthy of fishing. We may even post the odd GPS track for a float trip planned here and there. For now though, we are providing up this tasty tidbit teaser here of the possibilities.
Today, we are offering up a Google Earth KMZ image overlay that matches Barry Mitchell’s Alberta 2008 Fishing Guide regions. We’ve only plotted a few sample water bodies and descriptions from the guide — no we won’t share the entire guide with you here. Barry is a good friend, and that would be copyright infringement. We instead highly recommend you go buy a copy, and it’s available on most newsstands everywhere. In fact, I don’t go fishing without a copy on the dash.
In any case, when was the last time you considered making it “your personal mission” to try and explore every water body he’s listed in his guide.. and then some. There are hundreds upon hundreds of places to explore in the guide. Well, that is partly our mission here at 50N.
To use this file you will of course also need Google Earth installed first, then when you open the download file you will see an overlay template that matches the regions listed in Barry’s guide. From there, we encourage you (as we have done) to fill in the blanks. That is try to find those waterbodies listed in the guide, plot them, and then go explore them!
Our sample template goes a bit further in that we’ve also created polygons for still water bodies, and plotted tracks that follow major rivers and streams. That way, you can easily click on/off regions of interest, and explore plotted points in different levels of detail.
For example, interested in hitting a ‘plastic trout’ lake near Edmonton (Area 5) this weekend. Well, de-select all regions except Edmonton area then highlight to display only ‘Stocked Ponds’. From there, you can calculate, and find your best way to get there by right clicking on the point of interest and say.. give me directions to get here in Google. Easy eh, no normal mapbook will do this for you.
Again, in the future you may find here a map overlay of our own creation, showcasing waters that we’ve explored and that we think you should to. So check back often!
